The dog-faced water snake/ bockadam was first observed by Russell (1796), whoencountered the species in Ganjam, Odisha, and, instead of suggesting a Linneanbinomial name, used the local Telugu name for the snake instead. It was not until 1799that C. rynchops (then Hydrus rynchops) was formally described by Schneider (1799)using illustrations given by Russell three years prior (Figure 4). Since that time, thebockadam has undergone multiple taxonomic revision, by various authors, mostnotably Daudin (1802) who included it the genus “Coluber”, Merrem (1820) whoincluded it in the genus “Python”, and Stejneger (1907) who placed it in the genus“Hurria”. As noted by Murphy et al. (2012) Cerberus has had a chaotic nomenclaturalhistory which has seen 16 species being described, with over 44 combinations of namesapplied to species within the genus.
